Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy Biography

History records a galaxy of many great personalities who have added much to the development of an eminent Indiana freedom fighter, physician, education and social reforms. In this respect, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy deserves special mention.

Bidhan’s Early Life

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on 01 July 1882. He was born in Patna located in Bihar. His father Prakash Chandra Roy and mother Aghorkamini Devi. His father was an excise inspector. He was the youngest child in the family. He had four brothers and sisters. He lost his mother when he was just 14 years old. Her father had to stay out most of the time for his work. So five brothers and sisters shared the responsibility of housework among themselves.

Education

He passed matriculation in 1897 from Patna Collegiate School. After passing I.A from Calcutta Presidency College and B. Sc honors in Mathematics from Patna College, Bidhan Chandra moved to Calcutta in 1901 and settled here permanently.

 Although he was admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Bengal Engineering College, he chose medical education over engineering. He obtained L.M.S in 1906 and M.D in 1908 from Calcutta University.

Career & Designation

After graduation, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy joined the Provincial Medical Service and traveled around the country as a Physician. Dean rejected his plea because Bidhan Chandra was an Asian. But he did not give up and re-submitted his application 30 more times. His application was eventually accepted by the college. There he earned the degree of M.R.CP and M.R.C.S and later F.R.C.S for two years.

He returned to India in 1911 and joined Campbell Medical School, now the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital as a Physician. At the same time he started his own medical business. In a short time, his reputation as a psychiatrist began to spread. At the same time, his connection with the social life of the country began to be made.

In 1916, Bidhan Chandra was elected a member of Calcutta University. Two years later, in 1918, he left the government service at Campbell. He later joined Carmichael Medical College as a professor of medicine. Whose current name is R.G.Kar Medical College.

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy joined politics in 1923 while working at R.G.Kar Medical College. He contested the elections on behalf of the Swarajya Dal and was elected a member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly. She was the General Secretary of the Calcutta Congress in 1928 and the Mayor of the Calcutta Corporation in 1931-32.

Bidhan Chandra was patriotic, honest and fearless. He hoisted the national flag at the Calcutta Corporation in 1931 during the lawlessness movement. He was arrested at Ojarda station on his way back to Calcutta from Bombay. He maintained contact with the people of the country as a physician in spite of all his busy schedule. As a physician, he never forgot his responsibility towards the society. Therefore, as a physician, he gained fame and recognition not only in the country but also in the international arena.

Calcutta University Election Center In 1947, he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly as a Congress nominee. He was elected Chief Minister of West Bengal on 23 January 1948. From this time Bidhan Chandra’s active new life began. After independence, West Bengal was made up of one third of the land of the original Bengal, which was plagued by communal violence, food shortages, unemployment and various other problems. Within three years of his rule, law, order and the glory of Harno were restored. The long tenure of 14 consecutive years as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 to 1962 was extremely successful.

Major Activities

The economic development of the country depended on the industrial and communication system, so the then Chief Minister Bidhan Chanda Rai paid special attention to these two aspects of the state from the very beginning.

He took the initiative in various ways to revive the industry. The necessary raw material for the jute mills of West Bengal i.e. jute came from East Bengal.

As a result of partition, East Bengal became a different country. As a result, there was an extreme crisis in the state’s jute industry. Therefore, to deal with the situation, Bidhan Chanda made extensive arrangements for jute cultivation in West Bengal.

Bidhan Chandra Roy laid the foundations of five famous cities namely Bidhan Nagar, Kalyani, Durgapur, Ashok Nagar and Habra.

Apart from state transport, Harin Ghata Dairy Project, several universities such as Burdwan, Kalwani, Visva-Bharati and North Bengal Universities, Bondel Thermal Power Station and various projects of Damodar Valley Corporation were at the core of these establishment. . In a word, the creative genius and eloquence of Bidhan Chandra Roy influenced the transformation of West Bengal after independence. He has laid the foundation of economic development of West Bengal by establishing various heavy industries.

Awards & Achievements

Bidhan Chandra was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Topical Medicine and Hygiene in 1935 and a Fellow of the American Society of Chest and Physicians in 1940. In 1937 he became the chairman of the Bengal Parliamentary Committee.

In 1942, Bidhan Chandra became the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. He was also elected President of the Medical Council of India in 1944. In 1944, Calcutta University awarded him the title of D.S.C or Doctorate of Science.

On 4 February 1961, the Government of India awarded him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Personal Life & Legecy

Doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy did not get married. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the foremost physician of modern West Bengal and the country’s foremost physician, breathed his last on 1 July 1962, while working on his 80th birthday.

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy donated his house to work as a nursing home in the name of his mother Aghorkami Devi.

The B.C. Roy National Award was instituted in 1976 for work in the area of ​​Medicine, Politics, Science, Philosophy, Literature and arts.
