Kalpana Chawla represented India as a successful US astronaut and managed to become the first woman who was born on Indian territory in space. The transition from living in a small town situated in Haryana, India all the way to space exploration is a manifestation of how much self-determination, braveness, and constancy she possessed.
Birth and Early Childhood
On March 17, 1962, Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal located in Haryana state of India; she was the youngest among four children in the family who grew up in a close-knit environment that encouraged her to pursue dreams as well as interests. Her father who worked as civil engineer at construction sites had an interest aviation making her love these sky trips beginning early years whereas dreaming about flying over cloud tops emerged regularly during this period.
Education and Early Career
Chawla joined school at Tagore Public School situated in Karnal while at college she pursued aeronautical engineering course at Punjab Engineering College; In 1982 Chawla graduated with Honors in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. She then moved to America for further studies.
After this – she joined the University of Texas for her Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1984. In addition, she holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder which was acquired back in 1988.
A Career in Aviation
After completing her PhD, Chawla commenced work as an aeronautical engineer. In particular, she was employed by the Ames Research Center at NASA in California where she concentrated on aerodynamic research about unmanned aircraft Chawla’s expertise became indispensable in the sphere and her contributions to aviation research were widely acknowledged.
Selection into the NASA Astronaut Corps

Space Missions

The Indian government has given some awards to her in recognition of this contribution. In India there is a place called Kalpana Chawla Government College for Women situated in Haryana; moreover, this lady also has a crater named after her on the moon’s surface which means that many years will pass before she is forgotten at all times.
