Kapil Dev was born in Chandigarh, India on January 8, 1957. He came from a family with a strong sporting background – his father Ram Lal Dev used to play hockey at the international level for India. This was followed by a spectacular performance during the 1983 Cricket World Cup that propelled him into global stardom. During the championship match against West Indies, India’s skipper led the team’s triumph thereby gaining its first-ever world cup title hence breaking new ground in that sport’s history.
His ability to bat and bowl equally well was behind India’s success story. With a bat in hand, he was an attacking batsman who could turn a game around with aggressive stroke play.
