Early Life
Helen Adams Keller was born June 27, 188, in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA. When she was 19 months old, she fell ill and became deaf and blind, likely from meningitis or scarlet fever.
Education
When she was seven years old, her parents turned to Alexander Graham Bell who advised them to write a letter to the Perkins Institute for the Deaf. She was a student of Anne Sullivan, a young teacher. Using the method of spelling words in her hand Helen was able to communicate properly for the first time thanks to this action by Anne.
Breakthrough
It is said that Helen’s big moment came when she realized that whatever signs she was receiving through finger spelling on her palm from Anne Sullivan stood for things or ideas as well. It signified the start of Helen’s schooling.
Education and Advocacy
Having attended Perkins School for the Blind, Helen went ahead to join Radcliffe College, hence becoming the first person living with both hearing and visual impairments to acquire an undergraduate degree. She championed women’s rights, social equality, and the rights of people with disabilities throughout her life. Amongst her writings is an autobiography known as “The Story of My Life”.
